Jambojet (JM)
Posted in :
Jambojet is Kenya’s leading low-cost carrier and a subsidiary of Kenya Airways. Hub: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO / JKIA) in Nairobi, with a secondary hub in Mombasa. It operates a fleet of De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 (Q400) turboprops — currently expanding (ninth aircraft arriving shortly, with plans toward 11–16 aircraft by 2029). The airline focuses on affordable, high-frequency domestic flights and selective regional services. It has carried over 10 million passengers since launch in 2014.
Domestic (Local) Routes – Kenya
Jambojet’s core network is domestic, with high-frequency services:
| Route | Notes / Frequency (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Nairobi – Mombasa | Multiple daily (often 7–12+ flights/day) |
| Nairobi – Kisumu | High frequency (6–8 daily, increasing) |
| Nairobi – Eldoret | Several daily |
| Nairobi – Malindi | Regular |
| Nairobi – Ukunda (Diani) | Regular |
| Nairobi – Lamu | Daily or near-daily |
| Mombasa – Kisumu / Eldoret | Direct inter-city services |
Kisumu is one of the strongest routes (third-largest market after Nairobi and Mombasa). Capacity is being boosted with the new Q400 aircraft.
International / Regional Routes
- Nairobi – Entebbe (Uganda): Daily service resumed 1 October 2026 (after a multi-year suspension). Starting one-way fares around KES 22,950.
- Other regional activity has included Zanzibar (from Mombasa, previously operated) and past services such as Goma (DRC, currently suspended). The airline is actively exploring further expansion, including talks for South Sudan (Juba) routes.
Sample Fares (Economy / Base fares – highly variable)
Jambojet uses a true low-cost model: base ticket often includes only hand luggage (max 10 kg). Checked bags, seat selection, and other extras are paid separately.
Indicative one-way starting fares (non-peak, advance booking):
- Nairobi ↔ Mombasa / Kisumu: from ~KES 3,700 – 8,500+ (promotional/low-season deals common; peak/holiday periods can reach KES 15,000–20,000+)
- Nairobi ↔ Eldoret / Ukunda (Diani): from ~KES 4,200+
- Nairobi ↔ Malindi: from ~KES 5,700+
- Nairobi ↔ Lamu: from ~KES 7,000+
- Nairobi ↔ Entebbe: from ~KES 22,950 (introductory levels)
Fares rise sharply during holidays, weekends, and high-demand periods. Book early for the lowest rates.
Baggage note: Hand luggage 10 kg included. Checked baggage (prepaid) typically starts from KES 750–1,000 for up to 20–23 kg (higher at the airport).
